The nearest DMV to me is a nightmare. Not so much rudeness but way overused. Huge lines. There is another DMV in another town in our county just a few miles further that gives great service and has way shorter lines.
Interestingly, the Post Office near the good DMV sucks. Largely because they have a hard time keeping staff. Our closest Post Office gives fantastic service and appears to have fewer staffing problems.
I guess my point is, it all comes down to the individual culture at the individual office. Probably largely the supervisor sets a tone or expectations and most of the worker bees follow
My experience, too. My town has a terrible DMV branch, but the operation at USPS is quite busy but rather robotic in their service precision, and actuallykind of warm friendly-wise. Gotta be individual office leadership.
I think that there are several things going on here.
1. Branch culture is certainly important.
2. Local municipal politics is another.
3. Don’t underestimate the role of the postal workers union.
4. Absence of a meaningful corporate meritocracy.
5. Failure of top management, caused by the overwhelming apathy (or worse) of the management structure.
6. Congressional failure to reform the USPS pension system.
My hope is that Trump has put major postal reform on the back burner temporarily, until the authorities have made major inroads into the systemic election fraud problem. Once that has taken hold I think (pray) that many issues will resolve.
I despise these low life rascals. Florida has the best DMV in the country. Pleasant, and helpful. How Florida has figures it out, I don’t know. They are great, at least in Walton and Bay county
Miami Dade and Broward are Communist Central and only get worse. Miami wouldn’t post the portrait of President Trump in the lobby for years after 2016. Just blank walls after removing King Hussein of Chicago. These people deserve to be deported and/or jailed.
Is this a sign of the times? Like, a sign that the end is near? Hopefully the end of those cretan's careers. At least it was summer, and not winter. But it may be the same there in WA.
I'm also in a blue state, Illinois. In recent years they have made it harder to get those services in person. I used to have to drive to the nearest city that had a DMV office. You would just walk in and take a number and have a seat.
Now they recommend making an appointment. It is a hardship for me to get out anymore, but in my tiny rural town they send a "portable" team in to the City Hall twice a year for the elderly and disabled, or anyone. They are here for one day. I went in April, and there was no line. They were friendly. I had to take the eye exam, but the machine seemed to be malfunctioning. There was nothing on the line they told me to read back to them, lol. They finally said, "you passed" and took my photo. They give you a temporary license and send the new permanent one in the mail. I am so glad not to have to deal with the bigger offices in the city.
I am supposing you are in Washington state while all this lovelyness happened to you. I also lived in Washington for many years and was treated like a lesser human being by DMV employees. I moved to Florida and the people at the DMV are the nicest sweetest people trying so hard to make everything light and they even joke around. My husband and I were talking the other day when we were there about how different the State offices are here in Florida than they are in Washington State it is so amazing how Communists are so disgusting.
What a story, can't believe it's in the US. Bad as things are in PA, our people at DMV at the photo center are polite and helped me when I said I didn't understand what to do on one screen that was confusing. It had to do with voter registration. Was correctly told what to do. You really have a horror story you witnessed. Thanks for sharing, Erik. Truth is stranger than fiction, always!
You, sir, are a Saint!! Why do we allow people to be rude? Why do we allow them to treat us or anyone for that matter in a condescending way? Why can't polite people speak up? WHY CAN'T POLITE PEOPLE SPEAK UP?!!! Only rude people can speak up? why. can't. polite. people. speak. up?
In Tucson, we go to a third party who are licensed to do DMV work and they are a huge step up from official DMV/govt clerks. On the other hand there can be failures in digital data transfers of info either direction.
They used to be like that in nys, years ago. Then when that one republican gov got in, he must have read them the riot act. All of a sudden, the system was changed, the people were kind,it was like night and day. I think because in Florida there is competition, which is actually horrible, the state figured they better keep people coming.
Let me guess... were they Lefty Blue Liberals? My husband and I have run into these scenarios too. Drunk on their power to abuse the public and get away with it. Reminds me of the covid nightmare with these types yelling "where's your mask???"
One of many, but probably the worst, humiliation rituals we are forced to endure—-wonder how long we allow our govment(s) to continue such nonsense!?! God Bless!!!
Erik, the flaming a-holes at the DMV are self anointed pompous jackwads!! I’d rather have bamboo shoots shoved up my fingernails that go in there for a routine transaction!! Back in 2004 my house burnt down & my sister died unexpectedly at the age of 51. I had to visit the DMV for a new license & and paperwork on a new car since my old one was destroyed in the fire. The b!tch behind the counter was SO rude to me that it made me cry…obviously I was on edge either way recent traumatic events. I left there & immediately called our Country Clerk (who was married to a friend of mine) and filled him in on how rude the woman was to me. He said, “that’s her last chance, you are not the first person she’s done this to”. He called me back to say that she was fired! I didn’t like that someone lost their job, but people with a disposition like that have no business working with the public who pay their salaries!!!
"I'm sorry the state you live in has chosen to hire 'Trainables' and you are frustrated at having to deal with the public, who is frustrated with your inept system, designed by your inept and disinterested superiors. However, don't take it out on me, because somebody with the will and wherewithal will eventually shut down the gravy train you've been riding and then you'll be subjected to fitting into the real world."
This is not an isolated incident, Erik. Even in podunk E. Oregon, we are treated like garbage. And most of us are related to the employees in one way or another.
Maybe they are learning that their scheme of taxation without representation is going down the tubes, so they are transferring their anger onto the cattle (us) who've slaved away to pay their wages?
Or maybe not since this angry behavior has always been their norm. It has increased, however. I figure it'll come to them smacking our hands with rulers if this system keeps up.
Unbelievable! I admire you cool. As soon as I got my license I would have spoken up about how rude they were. But atlas instead of the soup nazi on Seinfeld, they’d probably record some bad notes about you like the Doctors did to Elaine. 😂
I'm sorry, but that story is kinda funny ! I mean, to a reader like me, NOT to Erik The Abused. Ahhh, the good ol' days, when that guy would get decked, with no repercussions. Am I advocating violence? No, justice ! I bet we all have had similar experiences, if not quite as frustrating as yours, Erik. I have. In my 'new' town of 7 years I have been 3 times to our DMV. Each time was the exact opposite of your experience. No Kidding ! In and out...kind helpful workers....zero frustration. I each time even complimented the lady behind the window. She smiled and said " Thank You! That means a lot to us !" Maybe I was time-warped into an alternate universe? And no, I currently am not on drugs or drunk !!!
The rest of us are caught up in the "twilight zone". Arizona's DMV was pretty user friendly until Ducey (governor) and Hobbs (secretary of state) combined to fetter Arizona with "shelter in place" everybody's closed tyranny after March 13th, 2020.
Agree 1000%. In Massachusetts we have a RMV with the same cast of miserable characters. You should not have asked for the government id. Next time I suggest you renew it at a Triple AAA location. What is the actual purpose of a DMV/RMV? Is it to register illegal voters?
I’m boiling after reading this. Frankly robots can’t arrive soon enough to replace the entire government monoliths of the DMV and USPS. 🤬

Lake County is great too! I have to admit Ramsey County was fine when we were in Minnesota.
Sumter County Florida DMV is also great @ Customer service.
AMEN Glitterpuppy
The people awesome & very sweet & heloful, that's FL
Exactly mine was easy n quick
Same in Volusia.

But I still want Pritzker arrested.

They have the corner on issuing drivers licenses so they can treat people like crap.

Good for you for reporting that awful person!

What a great story, Erik! Sucks to be those guys... They are their own punishment!
You reap what you sow.

I used to live in a tiny Oregon town, Wasco. But had to drive to The Dalles for things like the DMV.
Unbelievable! I admire you cool. As soon as I got my license I would have spoken up about how rude they were. But atlas instead of the soup nazi on Seinfeld, they’d probably record some bad notes about you like the Doctors did to Elaine. 😂
